field studies collection
These field studies form a central part of my painting practice. Made directly from observation, they are produced outdoors or from immediate reference, focusing on the essential structure of the landscape and the changing conditions of light.
Working at a smaller scale allows for speed and clarity. These studies are not about detail, but about understanding — reducing the landscape into its major shapes, tonal relationships, and colour structure before the moment passes. Light shifts quickly in the Australian landscape, and these works aim to capture those brief conditions as they occur.
Many of the ideas explored in these field studies later inform larger studio paintings. They act as both finished works in their own right and as records of direct engagement with place. Each piece reflects a specific moment — a passing cloud, the edge of light across a slope, or the way distance softens the land into atmosphere.
Together, these studies form an ongoing visual record of time spent working in the landscape, helping to build a deeper understanding of light, structure, and the character of the regions I return to regularly.
